If you’ve been keeping up with True Jersey (NJ.com), you’ve read about the roughly 20% monthly increase in the cards for our neighborhood’s electric bills starting June 1st. Just as a reference point, over the past decade, prices have only increased 2.8% annually on average*. Even worse, several residents are seeking ways “to cut corners on electric usage” because of these rising costs. To one’s dismay, it could have easily been avoided if the regional grid operator, PJM Interconnection, had connected more clean energy projects, particularly solar, the cheapest form of energy.
A solution above us all
The sky’s the limit on how much you can do to combat these rising electric costs. First, focus on conserving energy through simple practices like adjusting thermostats and using appliances more efficiently, which can significantly reduce your monthly bill immediately. Second, catch the Earth’s sunlight with a solar panel installation for longterm savings.
Solar panels are becoming extremely popular among homeowners. Annually, the typical US household can save around $1,500 on its electricity bills. Jersey plans to have 50% of its energy coming from Class 1 renewable resources by 2030. As of 2025, natural gas accounts for 49% of Jersey’s total electricity generation, and nuclear power 42% (the most expensive form of energy). Hence, the skyrocketing electric bills. PJM’s grid system relies heavily on fossil fuels. Two years ago, 90% of the state’s renewable energy production came from solar. During operation, solar panels produce energy while reducing the emission of toxic chemicals. Sounds like we were better off in 2023.
